Patna : England defeated five-time champion Australia by 8 wickets in one sided 2nd semi-finals of CWC at Edgbaston, Birmingham, England, on July 11, 2019, night, to reach the final of the tournament. With the defeat of Australia, the two teams who had topped the points table have been knocked out of the tournament. England fast bowler Chris Woakes was declared Player of the Match for taking 3/20 in 8 0vers.

New Zealand (NZ) had defeated table topper India in the first semi-finals on July 10.England will face New Zealand in the final. Ironically, both England and NZ had struggled to reach the semi-finals.

Replying to Australia’s 223 all out in 49 overs, England scored 226/2 in only 32.1 overs with opener Jason Roy scoring 85 in 119 balls hitting 9 fours and 5 sixes, Joe Root scoring 49 in 46 balls with 8 fours, and captain Eoin Morgan scoring 45 in 39 balls with 8 fours. Opener Jonny Bairstow scored 34.

England openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow added 124 runs for the first wicket giving a rollicking start to their team. Eoin Morgan and Joe Root added 79 runs for the 3rd wicket. England had lost to Australia in the league stage.
