Patna : England made a disastrous start to the first test of the Ashes series against Australia on December 8, 2021, getting all out for just 147 runs in 50.1 overs in their first innings at The Gabba, Brisbaine, Australia, on Day 1 with fast bowler Pat Cummins (captain) wreaking havov taking 5/38 in 13.1 overs while fellow fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood took two wickets each. For England, Jos Buttler was the top scorer with 39 runs in 58 balls with 5 fours while Ollie Pope scored 35 runs in 79 balls with 2 fours.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, England lost their first wicket that of opener Rory Burns (0) with no run on board. Burns was bowled by Starc. Dawid Malan fell to Pat Cummins for 6 and it was 11/2. England captain Joe Root fell to Josh Hazlewood for zero making it 11/3 after 5.5 overs.

Fast bowler Chris Woakes also fell to Cummins for 21 in 24 balls with 4 fours and England were all out for 147 runs and with it was stumps on Day 1.
