Patna : England, who had scored a mammoth 578 runs in their first innings, were all out for just 178 runs in their 2nd innings in the third session of play on Day 4 in 1st test against India at M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Tamilnadu, on February 8, 2021, as spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took 6/61 in 17.3 overs to finish with 9 wickets in the match while fellow spinner Shahbaz Nadeem took 2/66 in 15 overs. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma took one wicket each.

Captain Joe Root was the top scorer for England in second innings as well. Root had scored 218 runs in first innings.  England lead by 419 runs. India were all out for 337 runs in their first innings in the first session of play on Day 4 with Rishabh Pant scoring 91  and Washington Sundar an unbeaten 85.
