Patna : England were 98/2 in 30 overs at stumps on Day 2 in their first innings in 2nd test against Sri Lanka (SL) at Galle International Stadium, Galle, SL, on January 23, 2021, with captain Joe Root unbeaten on 67 in 77 balls hitting 10 fours and Jonny Bairstow batting on 24 in 65 balls with 4 fours. Root and Bairstow have so far added 93 runs in their unbroken partnership for the 3rd wicket. England trail by 283 runs.

EnglandĀ  had lost their first two wickets that of openers Zak Crawley and Dominic Sibley with just 5 runs on board. Sibley fell to spinner Lasith Embuldeniya for zero making it 4/1. Crawley also fell to left arm spinner Embuldeniya for 5 making it 5/2. But, after that Root and Bairstow steadied the ship.

Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 229/4, Sri Lanka were all out for 381 in 139.3 overs in their first innings with right arm fast medium bowler James Anderson taking 6/40 in 29 overs and fast bowler Mark Wood taking 3/84 in 28 overs. Sam Curran took one wicket.

All-rounder Angelo Mathews fell to James Anderson for 110 in 238 balls with 11 fours and it was 232/5. Ramesh Mendis fell to mark Wood for a duck making it 243/6.

But, Niroshan Dickwella and spinner Dilruwan Perera added 89 runs for the 7th wicket. Dickwella fell to Anderson for 92 in 144 balls with 10 fours and it was 332/7. Fast medium bowler Suranga Lakmal fell to Anderson for zero and it was 332/8. Lasith Embuldeniya fell to Mark Wood for 7 making it 364/9. Dilruwan Perera fell to Sam Curran for 67 in 170 balls with 8 fours and 1 six and SL were all out for 381 in their first innings.
