Patna : England were 60/2 in 21 overs in their first innings in 1st test against South Africa (SA) at lunch on Day 2 at SuperSpoet Park, Centurion, South Africa, on December 27, 2019, with Captaon Joe Root unbeaten on 23 in 40 balls hitting 4 fours and Joe Denly batting on 17 in 61 balls with 3 fours.

Earlier resuming at their overnight score of 277/9, SA were all out for 284 in 84.3 overs in their first innings in the first hour of play on Day 2 with Quinton de Kock scoring 95 in 128 balls hitting 14 fours. For England, Stuard Broad took 4/58 in 18.3 overs while Sam Curran took 4/58 in 20 overs. Jofra Archer and James Anderson, who is playing his 150th test, took one wicket each.

England lost their first wicket that of opener Rory Burns at 11. Burn fell to Vernon Philander for 9. His opening patner Dominic Sibley fell to fast bowler Jofra Archer for 4 making it 15/2. England trail by 224 runs.
