Patna : England were 38/3 in 15 overs in their second innings at stumps on Day 4 in 1st test against England at Galle International Stadium, Galle, Sri Lanka (SL), on January 17, 2021, still needing 36 runs to win the match to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match test series. Jonny Bairstow was unbeaten on 11 while debutant Daniel Lawrence was batting on 7 at Stumps on Day 4.

Chasing a target of 74 runs to win the first test, England were reduced to 14/3 with spinner Lasith Embuldeniya taking the wickets of openers Zak Crawley (8) and Dominic Sibley (2). Sibley fell to Embuldeniya for 2 making it 3/1. Crawley also fell to Embuldeniya for 8 making it 12/2. Captain Joe Root, who had scored 228 in first innings, his 4th double ton in test matches, was run out for 1 and it was 14/3.

Earlier resuming at their overnight score of 156/2, SL were all out for 359 in their 2nd innings with opener Lahiru Thirimanne scoring 111 in 251 balls with 12 fours while all-rounder Angelo Mathews scored 71 in 229 balls with 4 fours. Angelo fell to spinner Jack Leach. Captain Dinesh Chandimal also fell to Jack Leach for 20. Niroshan Dickwella (wk) fell to spinner Dom Bess for 29. Spinner Dilruwan Perera fell to Jack Leach for 24 in 38 balls with 5 fours.

England spinner Jack leach took 5/122 in 41.5 overs while fellow spinner Dom Bess took 3/100 in 33 overs. Medium fast bowler Sam Curran took 2/37 in 11 overs.

SL had scored 135 runs in their first innings while England scored 421 runs in their first innings.
