Patna : Opting to bat after winning the toss, England were 321/8 in 91 overs at stumps on day 1 of the first cricket test against Sri Lanka (SL) at Galle International Stadium, on Galle, Srilanka, on November 6, 2018, riding on good battingĀ  by its lower order batsmen including an unbeaten 87 by wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, 48 by all-rounder Sam Curran, and 35 by spinner Adil Rashid. Captain Joe Root made 35 while Jos Buttler scored 38.

Opener Keaton Jennings scored 46 in 53 balls with 7 fours. Sam Curran hit 3 sixes and a four in his 48 in 104 balls. Ben Foakes, 25, who is making his test debut, has hit 6 fours in his unbeaten 87 in 184 balls while Sdil Rashid hit 4 fours and 2 sixes in his 35 in 38 balls.

For Sri Lanka, Dilruwan Perera took 4/70 while Suranga Lakmal took 2/57. Spinners Akila Dananjaya and Rangana Herath, who will retire from international cricket after first test, took one wicket each.
