Patna : England were 218/4 in 79 overs at stumps on Day 3 in their second innings in 2nd test against South Africa (SA) at Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa, on January 5, 2020, with opener Dominic Sibley unbeaten on 85 in 222 balls hitting 13 fours. Sibley and England Captain Joe Root added 116 runs for the third wicket. Root fell to Dwaine Pretorius for 61 in 98 balls with 7 fours. England, who had scored 269 in their first innings, lead by 264 runs with 6 wickets in hand. Root has completed 1,000 runs against SA in tests in 20 innings.

England lost their first wicket at 28 when opener Zak Crawley fell to SA fast bowler Kagiso Rabada for 25 in 35 balls hitting 5 fours. Sibley and Joe Denly added 73 runs for the 2nd wicket. Denly fell to fast bowler Anrich Nortje for 31 in 111 balls with 3 fours making it 101/2. Sibley and Root added 116 runs for third wicket. Root fell to Pretorious and it was 217/3. Spinner Dominic Bess fell to Nortje for a duck and it was 218/4.

For SA, Anrich Nortje took 2/36 in 15 overs while Kagiso Rabada took 1/41 in 13 overs. Dwaine Pretorius took 1/34 in 12 overs.
