Patna : England were 169/3 in 52 overs at tea in their first innings on Day 1 against Australia in the 5th Ashes Test at Kennington Oval, London, on September 12, 2019, night, with captain Joe Root unbeaten on 57 in 131 balls hitting 3 fours and Jonny Bairstow (wk) batting on 22 in 33 balls with 3 fours. Root and Bairstow have so far added 39 runs for the 4th wicket.

England lost the wickets of opener Rory Burns  and all-rounder Ben Stokes in the second session of the play. Burns fell to fast bowler Josh Hazlewood for 47 in 87 balls with 7 fours while Stokes fell to all-rounder Mitchell Marsh for 20 in 36 balls with 2 fours. Burns and Root had added 76 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Opener Joe Denly fell to fast bowler Pat Cummins for 14 in the first session of the play.
