Eng 93/4 in 2nd innings, staring defeat in 5th Ashes test at Sydney

Patna : England were staring at defeat with 93/4 at stumps on the fourth day of the 5th Ashes test against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney, on January 7, 2018, with Captain Joe Root batting on 42 in 124 balls not hitting a single four and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow unbeaten on 17 in 45 balls hitting 3 fours. England are trailing by 210 runs.

England opener Alastair Cook was out for 10 while his partner Mark Stoneman was out for duck. James Vince made 18 while Dawid Malan was out for 5 only. For Australia, spinner Nathan Lyon took 2/ 31 and fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins took one wicket each. England had made 346 in their first innings with skipper Joe Root scoring 83.

Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 479/4, Australia declared their first innings at 649/7 with Shaun Marsh scoring 156 ( run out) and his younger brother and all rounder Mitchell Marsh scoring 101. With this three Australian batsmen hit tons in the Australia’s first innings. Usman Khwaja had made 171 on January 6.

The Marsh brothers, both of whom scored their second century in the series, were involved in stand of 169 runs for the fifth wicket. Shaun Marsh was unbeaten on 98 at stumps on January 6, 2018, while Mitchell Marsh was unbeaten on 63. Wicketkeeper Tim Paine remained not out on 38 while fast bowler Pat Cummins remained unbeaten on 24. Mitchell Starc was out for 11.
