Patna : World No 1 and top seed Novak Djokocic, 33, Serbia, World No 3 & erd seed Dominic Thiem,  27, Austria, 6th seed Alexander Zverev, 23, Germany, reached 2nd round of Australian Open (AO) 2021 at Melbourne Park, Australia, on February 8, 2021, but 10th seed Gael Monfils, 34, France crashed out of the tournament suffering a shock defeat at the hands of World No 86 Emil Ruusuvuori, 21, Finland, in a five set thriller.

Eight time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic beat World No 61 Jeremy Chardy, 33, France, in straight sets 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 in first round winning 6 break points and 7 games in a row during the match. Djokovic, in all, won 91 points in the match to 52 by Chardy. The Serbian hammered 9 Aces in the match to 3 by Chardy. Njokovic first won AO singles title in 2008 and thereafter in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2020.

Reigning US Open  Champion Dominic Thiem defeated World No 90 Mikhail Kukushkin, 33, Kazakhstan, 7-6, 6-2, 6-3 to march into 2nd round. Thiem won 7 break points during the match to 3 by the Kazakh. Kukushkin, howevder, served 4 Aces in the match to just 1 by the Austrian, the 2020 AO finalist. Thiem also won 6 games in a row in the match to 2 by Kukushkin.

World No 6 Alexander Zverev beat World No 75 Marcos Giron, 27, US, in four-sets 6-7, 7-6,6-3, 6-2 in first round. Zverev fired 16 Aces in the match to 6 by Giron. He won 6 break points during the match to 2 by the American. The German, in all, won 140 points to 109 by the American. Both the players won 3 games each i n arow during the match.

Making his AO debut, Emil Ruusuvouri beat World No 11 Gael Monfils 3-6, 6-4,7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in 3 hrs 46 minutes in first round. Both the players won 6 break points each during the match. Ruusuvouri saved 17 of the 23 break points he faced in the match. Ruusuvouri, in all, won 184 points in the match to 171 by Monfils. The Frenchman, however, fired 13 Aces in the match to 4 by Ruusuvouri. Ruusuvouri though committed 11 double faults to 5 by Monfils. Bothe the players won 4 games each in a row during the match.

World No 18 & 2014 AO champion Stan Wawrinka, 35, Switzerland, beat World No 107 Pedro Sousa, 32, Portugal, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 winning 4 break points to enter the 2nd round.  The Swiss, in all, won 95 points during the match to 68 by Sousa. Wawrinka also won 3 games in a row in the match.
