Patna : Reigning Wimbledon champion and World No 6 in ATP rankings Novak Djokovic, 31, Serbia, and World No 19 Kei Nishikori 28, Japan, entered the semi-finals of US Open championship on September 5, 2018, late night. Both the players will each other in the semi-finals on September 8, 2018. World No 1 and defending champion Rafael Nadal, 32, Spain, will play World No 3 Juan Martin del Porto, 29, Serbia, in the other semi-finals.
Djokovic beat World No 55 John Millman, 29, Australia, in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter-finals at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing Meadows, New York. Millman had defeated World No 2 and winner of 20 Grand Slam titles Roger Federer, 37, in the 4th round.
Both the players committed 4 double faults each in the match. Millman served 3 Aces to 1 by Djokovic. But, Djokovic’s winning percentage on both his first and second serve was much better than that of Millman. Both the players won 3 games in a row each in the match. Djokovic, however, won 4 breakpoints to just 1 by Millman.
Nishikori, on the other hand, upset World No 7 and 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, 29, Croatia, in a five-set marathon 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals. Cilic fired 18 Aces in the match to 6 by Nishikori. Cilic committed 7 double faults to 4 by Nishikori. Cilic won 6 break points to 5 by Nishikori. Cilic’s winning percentage on both his first and second serve was also better than that of his rival. But, Nishikori won 6 games in a row to just 3 by Cilic.
