Patna : Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated three-time champion Chennai Super kings (CSK) by 5 wickets in the 34th match of IPL 2020 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah, UAE, on October 17, 2020, late night, with opener Shikhar Dhawan scoring an unbeaten 101 in 58 balls hitting 14 fours and a 1 six, his first IPL ton, and spinner Axar Patel scoring an unbeaten 21 in 5 balls hitting 3 sixes, all in the last over bowled by Ravindra Jadeja. DC needed 17 runs in the last over to win the match. Replying to CSK’s 179/4 in 20 overs, DC scored 185/4 in 19.5 overs. Shikhar Dhawan was named Player Of The Match.
It was DC’s 7th win in 9 matches and they have now 14 points and are at the top of points table. For CSK, it was their 6th defeat in 9 matches and have only points.
Opting to bat after winning the toss, CSK made a very bad start losing their first wicket that of opener Sam Curran without any run on board making it 0/1. Curran fell to medium fast bowler Tushar Deshpandey, 25. Faf du Plessis and Shane Wason then added 87 runs for the 2nd wicket. Watson fell to fast bowler Anrich Nortje for 36 in 28 balls hitting 6 fours and it was 87/2. Faf du Plessis fell to fast bowler Kagiso Rabada for 58 in 47 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes and it was 109/3. Captain M S Dhoni (wk) fell to Nortje for 3 making 129/4.
Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja then added 50 runs in their unbroken partnership for the 5th wicket. Rayudu remained unbeaten on 45 runs in 25 balls hitting 1 four and 4 sixes while Jadeja remained unbeaten on 33 in 13 balls hitting 4 sixes two each off Kagiso Rabada and Anruch Nortje in the last two overs.
Chasing the target, DC also made equally bad start losing the wicket of completely out of form opener Prithvi Shaw without any run on board making it 0/1. Shaw fell to fast bowler Deepak Chahar for zero. Ajinkya Rahane also fell to Deepak Chahar for 8 and it was 26/2. Shreyas Iyer fell to D J Bravo for 23 in 23 balls with 1 four and 1 six. Marcus Stoinis fell to Shardul Thakur for 24 in 14 balls with 1 four and 2 sixes. Alex Carey (wk) fell to Sam Curran for 4 and it was 159/5.
