Bhitiharwa  (West Champaran) : CPI leader and former President of JNU Students’ Union Kanhaiya Kumar was on January 30, 2020, detained by police  for around 30 minutes at Mahatma Gandhi Ashram, Bhitiharwa, 280 km north from Patna in West Champaran district in North  Bihar near Indo-Nepal border, when he tried to address a meeting against CAA and NRC  allegedly without seeking permission from the district administration. DM, West Champaran, Nilesh Ramchandran Deora, confirmed his detention. Kanhaiya Kumar was released after 30 minutes.

Kanhaiya Kumar reached Bhitiharwa Ashram on January 30 morning with the opposition party leaders to start his  statewide march against CAA and NRC on the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and was addressing a gathering there.  Police detained him at the Ashram as DM, West Champaran, Nilesh Ramchandran Deora, had  prohibited  him from addressing the meeting in the background of law and order problem on January 29, 2020,  and it was officially communicated  to his party  functionaries. He was scheduled to address a public meeting at Kudiya near Narkatiyaganj.

Large number of policemen headed by SDPO Narkatiyaganj were deployed at the Ashram. They chased away the  CPI supporters from there, Kanhaiya Kumar told this reporter and alleged the state government has gaged the voice of  opposition.

Kanhaiya Kumar is also scheduled to address a public meeting at Motihari  sports club ground too where more than 200   persons had assembled at 1 pm after getting information about his detention at Bhitiharwa. Police rushed to the  meeting venue to control the situation.
