Bhagalpur : Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation  Uma Bharati on June 1, 2017, said that a committee is being set up in her ministry to look into the issues of de-silting and mining in river Ganga in Bihar that hampers the flow of the river.
Addressing a Ganga Chaupal in Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district in Bihar as part of her ongoing ‘Ganga Nirikshan Abhiyan’ which entered Bihar on its sixth day on June 1, the Minister said that a sewage treatment plant will be constructed at Sultanganj. She talked about various initiatives on biodiversity and restoration of aqua- life being undertaken by National Mission for Clean Ganga. The Minister said that under Namami Gange Programme, afforestation and plantation activities are being carried out on the banks of river Ganga to avoid soil-erosion and dumping of sewage and industrial waste into the river, according to a PIB release.

The Minister said that Namami Gange team has been working tirelessly on creation of Sewage Treatment Plants to create adequate sewage treatment capacities besides projects to make towns and villages along river Ganga Open Defecation Free. She added that while existing ghats in the state will be renovated, new ones will also be constructed. Rest rooms will be built on ghats for devotees.

After her address at Sultanganj, the Minister conducted another interactive session at Munger and  talked about the association with Forestry Departments, CIFRI, Wildlife Institute of India and NEERI to work on various aspects related to river Ganga.
