Patna : Reigning Olympic champion Chen Long, 30, China, edged past 2017 World Champion Viktor Axelsen, 25, Denmark, in a three-game thriller in a Group B match in USD 1,500, 000 HSBC BWF World Tour Finals at Guangzhou, China, on December 11, 2019.
Top eight players in the world split into two groups are participating in the tournament. The winner of the tournament will get 12,000 BWF rankings points and $120,000 prize money. The runner-up will get 10,200 points and $ 60,000 prize money. The semi-finalists will get 8,400 points plus $30,000 cash prize.
World No 4 Chen beat World No 5 Axelsen in three-games 21-17, 10-21,21-17 in 71 minutes at Tianhe Gymnasium, Guangzhou, in the first match in Group B. Chen won 52 rallies in the match to 55 by Axelsen. Both the players won 5 consecutive points each. Chen now leads Axelsen 14-4 Head to Head.
