LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’ѕ economic model is not broken bսt Europe’ѕ bbiggest economy
has lost competitiveness оver the past decade, German Finance
Minister Christian Lindner ѕaid on Monday.

“We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,” he tokld journalists ahead
օf a Eurogroup meeting.

Ƭhe German economy іs expefted to contract by 0.2% іn 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson saiud
᧐n Μonday, cutting tһe forecast frоm a рrevious projection of
0.3% growth tһis year.

If realised, thos would bbe the second consecutive yeaг
of contraction for Germany’s economy, which was tthe weakest ɑmong іts large euro
zone peers ⅼast year with a 0.3% decline in grosxs domestic product.

Lindner ѕaid the government was introducing supply-ѕide measures tⲟ try
to return tthe economy tօ growth.

“After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,”
Lindner ѕaid, addng that tһе grrowth initiative ᴡaѕ ϳust ɑ first step fօr an economic turnaround, “but we have to build on it.”

AMBITION ΝEEDED

Lindner ѕaid “ambition” ᴡɑs neeԀеd to keep EU public finances in order,
or to pᥙt them back in order ѡhere neϲessary.

“I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,” Liindner ѕaid.
“What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”

Lindner saіⅾ һｅ coᥙld not comment on tһe French budget plans Ьecause he had not had thｅ chance to
talk wіth һis French colleagues ｙet, but һe
would do sⲟ on Мonday evening.

“We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,”

despite expectations, it bombed, raking in just under $40 million at the domestic box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book

Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her turn as Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the Joker – a role that won him the best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake of the standing ovation it received at the
Venice Film Festival last month.

‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked that
people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before it premiered,

project was canceled.

his final cinematic release.

distract from the backlash, insiders have told DailyMail.com

Joker: Folie à Deux has flopped at the box office, with the psychological musical thriller also landing the lowest CinemaScore for a comic book movie

Gaga, real name is Stefani Germanotta, is hoping the Joker 2 flop will just be a small blip in her
career, after the film received a D rating on CinemaScore
— the lowest score for a comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible
reviews — holds the higher score of C+.

Joker notably opened with $96.2 million on its theater release in 2019 and
eventually took a little over $1 billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by Phillips – had
a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget more
than doubled to around $200 million for Folie À Deux. 

The sequel screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month, where it earned a 12-minute standing
ovation, per Deadline.   

It had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number drastically
dropped amid mixed reviews before release. 

Audiences have since shared their opinions on the sequel,
which features multiple musical sequences. 

‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this,’ wrote one
on X. ‘What happened to the script?’

Another user added: ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if the original wasn’t a musical.’ 

An insider told DailyMail.com: ‘Gaga is surprised by
the response to Joker 2 and is shocked that people don’t
love it after the response it received from critics before it premiered’

‘Joker downfall really needs to be studied,’ shared a third, along with a monkey
staring out a window. 

One fan branded it ‘bad,’ adding:’ It was pretentious and dull.
Has the aesthetic of an arthouse film without the
substance.

‘It also insults the audience’s intelligence. the songs were also underwhelming too.
They shouldn’t have let this escape to theaters.’ 

Another said: ‘The audience that loved the first movie is not

Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s final scene, which saw Phoenix’s
Arthur Fleck brutally stabbed to death by a
fellow inmate who could in fact by the real Joker.

But others did jump in in defense of the film, with
one hailing it ‘amazing.’

‘100% as divisive as people are making it
out to be,’ they continued. ‘I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any
other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said: ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how
it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were
a lot of fun.’

A video of Gaga and Phoenix’s awkward reaction to being asked if Folie à Deux
was ‘everything they expected’ went viral amid the backlash.

For a few seconds, the two stars sat in silence as they both waited for the other to answer the question.

‘Tell them how you feel, Joaquin,’ Gaga said to her costar as she held out a
fake microphone in front of him.

‘It’s so hard to talk about but I think we feel like we achieved what we set out to do,’
he replied.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.

One way to understand it is to look at a crack in the sidewalk
(or perhaps a cracker) and compare that shape to the path of a lightning stroke through the sky.
Lightning usually originates at altitudes of around ten miles, and can reach about that far horizontally.
Air does not conduct electricity until it is
broken down (‘ionized’) by a high voltage electric field.
This breakdown is a random, unpredictable process that proceeds in a series of steps between the sky and

Cigarette giant Philip Morris – the company behind Marlboro and Benson &
Hedges – has been accused of using a life insurance scheme to tempt smokers to its highly profitable ‘heated’ tobacco products – rather than switch to potentially less dangerous alternatives.

Philip Morris’s insurance brand Reviti, which launched last
month, offers smokers a 25 per cent discount on premiums for life cover if they switch to its
IQOS heated tobacco device for three months.

This is potentially less harmful than a traditional cigarette because
the tobacco is heated but not burned, so an IQOS customer poses less
risk to the insurer.

But this discount is slashed to 2.5 per cent if the customer uses
any brand of heated tobacco device other than Philip Morris’s IQOS.

And if smokers switch to Philip Morris’s e-cigarette or ‘vape’ device they are offered
a similarly minuscule discount of 2.5 per cent – even though
health experts claim vaping is less dangerous than inhaling
heated tobacco vapour.

Reviti does offer Britons a 50 per cent discount if
they stop smoking altogether for a year, putting the price in line with
standard non-smokers’ life insurance.

But public health experts told The Mail on Sunday that if Philip Morris
based its discounts on science alone, the company would offer
a bigger discount for vaping than heated tobacco, and would not favour its
own brand over others.

They said it was more likely that the company was putting profit before the health of
its customers.

The Mail on Sunday can reveal that heated tobacco products
earn manufacturers nearly three times as much
profit as traditional cigarettes. Heated tobacco is also a more expensive way to smoke than vaping.
Analysis based on average usage of 11 cigarettes a day
showed that vaping using Philip Morris products costs about £2 a day compared
with nearer £3.50 to use heated tobacco.

Linda Bauld, professor of public health at the University of Edinburgh, said:
‘From a health perspective, it doesn’t make sense to offer a greater discount to clients who use heated tobacco than those who
use e-cigarettes.

‘We know vaping is far less harmful than smoking, [but] for heated tobacco we are far less sure.’

Both heated tobacco and vaping devices are soaring in popularity as alternatives to cigarettes.
The Royal College of Physicians estimates that using a vaping device
poses just 5 per cent of the risk of a traditional cigarette.

There has been little independent research into the effects of
heated tobacco, but medical experts pointed to
a Public Health England report last year, which concluded that heated tobacco products ‘may be more harmful than e-cigarettes’.

An initial study by the University of St Andrews
found heated tobacco had higher cancer-causing properties than e-cigarettes.
And an analysis of Philip Morris’s own data by one academic found
heated tobacco to be ‘not significantly different’ from cigarettes in the
harm it causes in the body.

Professor Anna Gilmore, director of the Tobacco Control Research Group at the University of Bath, said: ‘The idea that science underpins
the far greater reduction in insurance premiums on heated tobacco
products than on e-cigarettes is laughable.
Despite the lack of evidence on long-term safety, the consensus is e-cigarettes will be considerably safer
than heated tobacco products.

‘Most of the science on heated tobacco products has been produced by tobacco companies – one would be foolish to
trust it.’

Philip Morris set up Reviti in April, saying it was part of efforts to move to a ‘smoke-free future’,
as it wants to ‘incentivise people to improve their lifestyles’.

British American Tobacco, the maker of Dunhill, said that its
gross margin on heated tobacco products is 2.8 times higher than cigarettes

Research by The Mail on Sunday found a 50-year-old
man who smoked would be charged £99.91 a month for £250,000 of
life insurance cover with Reviti.

A 50-year-old man who uses IQOS pays £75.24 a month for identical cover,
but would have to pay £97.39 a month if he used a rival heated tobacco device or e-cigarettes.

In a presentation to investors last year, Philip Morris said its IQOS
customers are ‘significantly more valuable’ than cigarette
smokers.

British American Tobacco went further in a presentation in March, revealing
that its gross margin on heated tobacco products is 2.8 times higher
than cigarettes.

Philip Morris’s latest trading update said
sales growth of its heated tobacco helped it increase its total tobacco shipments
by 1.1 per cent year on year, despite global smoking rates
being in decline.

However, it did not disclose how heated tobacco’s profitability compares with vaping devices.

A Philip Morris spokesman said: ‘It is important to keep in mind that
both the qualitative and the quantitative composition of e-cigarette aerosols is greatly
variable. This is why the risk profile of e-cigarettes
and other non-combustible products must be assessed on a
product- specific basis.’
