Patna : Tripura BJP president Biplab Kumar Deb, 48, was on March 9, 2018, sworn in as chief minister of Tripura. Deb has assumed charge of the first BJP government in Tripura. The swearing-in ceremony  was attended by PM Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, senior BJP leaders Lal Krishna Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi.

Chief ministers of BJP ruled states – Vijay Rupani (Gujarat), Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Madhya Pradesh), Sarbananda Sonowal (Assam), and Raghubar Das (Jharkhand) also attended the function.

The BJP and its ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) had secured two-third majority in the elections to Tripura Assemly held on February 18, 2018, ending 25 year rule of the Left Front and 20 year reign of Manik Sarkar, 69, a veteran CPMl leader. The BJP had secured majority on its own winning 35 seats in 60-member Tripura Assembly. The BJP had fileded 51 candidates in the 2018 polls leaving 9 for its ally. The polls results were declared on March 3, 2018. The BJP had failed to win even a single seat in 2013 Tripura Assembly elections.

Governor Tathagata Roy also administered the oath of office to BJP leader Jishnu Deb Burman as the deputy chief minister along with seven other ministers including IPFT chief N C Debbarma. Outgoing Tripura CM Manik Sarkar also attended the event.
