Patna : Bihar governor Ram Nath Kovind resigned from his post on June 20, 2017, following his nomination as the NDA  candidate for presidential poll on June 19. Kovind had left for Delhi on June 19 afternoon within hours of BJP president Amit Shah announcing his name as NDA candidate for the post of President of India. The poll is scheduled for July 17, 2017.

President Pranab Mukherjee accepted the resignation of Bihar governor Kovind. Bengal Governor Keshrinath Tripathi has been given additional charge of Bihar governor too. Kovind was appointed Bihar governor in August 2015. Kovind on June 20 called on Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. BJP president Shah too met Kovind on the day.

As far as opposition candidate for the post of President of India goes, the names of former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, former Union Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde,Gopal Krishna Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, and Prakash Ambedkar, grandson of B R Ambedkar, are doing the rounds. The opposition parties would discuss the issue on June 22.
