Patna : Bihar governor Ram Nath Kovind, 71, a dalit leader from UP, was on June 19, 2018, declared as the NDA candidate for the post of President of India. BJP president Amit Shah announced this after a two hour meeting of BJP Parliamentary Board. Kovind was appointed Bihar Governor on August 8, 2015.
Kovind is likely to file his papers on June 23. The election is scheduled for July 17, 2017, while the counting will take place on July 20. Shah said political parties had been informed about the NDA’s choice.
A two-time member of Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2006 and former national spokesperson of the party, Kovind headed the BJP’s Scheduled Caste Morcha between 1999 and 2002. Governor Kovind left for Delhi on June 19 itself.
