Patna: Senior Advocate and Swaraj Abhiyan leader Prashant Bhushan as well as Bihar government on Friday moved the Supreme Court challenging the September 7, 2016, Patna High Court (PHC) order granting bail to gangster-turned-politician Mohammad Shahabuddin, 49. The SC will hear the petitions on September 19, 2016.

Prashant Bhushan filed the petition on behalf of on behalf of Chandrakeshwar Prasad of Siwan, Bihar, whose three sons were allegedly murdered at the behest of RJD strongman and former MP from Siwan Shahabuddin. Chandrakeshwar Prasad was very disappointed when Shahabuddin walked out of the Bhagalpur jail on September 10. this Saturday. Shahabuddin came ou of jail after 11 years. He was granted bail by Patna High Court on September 7 in connection with the murder of a man who was a witness to  the killing of his two brothers in Siwan. Bihar government filed its own petition in the SC against the bail granted to Shahabuddin.

Shahabuddin’s release on bail has evoked widespread criticism of the Grand Alliance government in Bihar headed by Nitish Kumar and the Natonal Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders are accusing it of paving the way for  his release by not strongly opposing the bail  in the court. The NDA, in a memorandum submitted to Bihar governr Ram Nath Kovind, has demanded Shahabuddin’s externment from Bihar. Shahabuddin was given a red carpet welcome by his supporters after his release from jail. The on September 15 demanded immediate arrest of Shahabuddin accusing him of being the main conspirator behind the murder of Siwan journalist Rajdeo Ranjan.

Shahabuddin, on the other hand, said he has not received any court notice. The former Siwan MP also said that he was no bothered by the petitions filed in the SC.
