New Delhi : The Union Cabinet, at its meeting chaired by PM Narendra Modi on April 19, 2017, decided to do away with beacons of all kinds atop all categories of vehicles in the country from May 1, 2017. It is aimed at strengthening healthy democratic values in the country.
The government is of the considered opinion that beacons on vehicles are perceived symbols of VIP Culture and have no place in a democratic country, according to a PIB release. They have no relevance whatsoever. Beacons, however, will be allowed on vehicles concerned with emergency and relief services, ambulance, fire service etc. In the light of this decision, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will make necessary provisions in the law.
Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari became the first minister to take the beacon off his official vehicle after the Cabinet meeting. Gadkari said this government is a government of common masses and has decided to abolish VIP culture of beacon lights and sirens.
