Patna : Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Australia scored 242/9 against India in the 5th ODI at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur, in 50 overs on October 1, 2017, with S Warner scoring 53 and Mark Stoinis making 46. Tavis Head made 42 runs but Skipper S Smith made only 16. The first Australian wicket to fall was that of Aaron Finch who fell to Hardik Pandya for 32.

For India, Axar Patel took 3/38, Jasprit Bumrah took 2/51 and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar 1/40. Kedar Jadhav took the wicket of Smith. India, which had dropped Bumrah, Bhuvaneshwar and Kuldip Yadav for the 4th ODI and brought in Mohd Shami, Umesh Yadav and Azar Patel, brought Bumrah, Bhuvaneshwar and Kuldip back for the 5th ODI. Axar Patel as retained but Y Chahal was dropped. India had lost the 4th ODI by 21 runs.
