Patna : Australia inflicted a demoralising 146 runs defeat on India in the second test at Perth Stadium, Perth, Australia, on the fifth day of the play on December 18, 2018, to level the four-test series 1-1. India had won the first test. Australian spinner Nathan Lyon, who took 8 wickets in the match was declared Player of the Match.
Resuming at their overnight score of 112/5, India were all out for just 140 runs in 56 overs chasing a target of 287 runs. The 6th India wicket that of Hanuma Vihari fell when the score was 119 while wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was out at 137. The last three wickets added only three runs with Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah getting out for zero each. Umesh Yadav made two. Hanuma Viharo scored 28 while Pant made 30.
For Australia, Nathan Lyon took 3/39 and Mitchell Starc 3/46. Vice-captain Josh Hazlewood took 2/24 while Pat Cummins took 2/25.
Australia had scored 326 in their first innings and 243 in the second. India made 283 in the first innings and folded for only 140 in the second suffering a humiliating 146 run defeat. Virat Kohli had scored 123 in the first innings, his 25th test century. India coach Ravi Shastri has described the Team India as the best travelling side in last 15 years but the fact remains that at present India has the weakest opening pair in the world cricket. Kohli said Australia deserved to win the test with the way they bowled.
