Patna : Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Australia were all out for 243 in 71.3 overs in their first innings against South Africa one hour after tea on day one of the second cricket test at St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on March 9, 2018. Souh Africa were 4/0 in 2.1 over.
Opener David Warner was the top scorer for Australia scoring 63 runs in 100 balls hitting 9 fours followed by opener Cameron Bancroft with 38. Both were involved in a 98 run partnership for the first wicket. Captain Steven Smith made 25 while Shaun Marsh was out for 24. Both Usman Khwaja and Mitchell Marsh made fou each. Wicketkeeper Tim Paine made 36 in 68 balls hitting 5 fours. Josh Hazlewood remained not out on 10 while Pat Cummins was out without scoring. Spinner Nathan Lyon made 17 and fast bowler Mitchell Starc 8.
The first Australian wicket of opener Cameron Bancroft fell just before lunch when the team score was 98. But post lunch, South African bowler Kagiso Rabada turned the match on its head in a devastating spell of fast bowling taking three wickets. He took the wickets of Australian captain Steven Smith, Shaun Marsh and Mitchell Marsh reducing Australia to 170/6. Rabada also accounted for Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. Five Australian wickets fell in the post-lunch session. Four Australian wickets fell in the post tea session. Ngidi took the wickets of Warner, Paine and Nathan Lyon.
Rabada took 5/96 in 21 overs while fellow fast bowler Lungisani Ngidi took 3/51 in 13.3 overs. Vernon Philander, who was very economical, took 2/25 in 18 overs. Australia had won the first test leading the four-match test series 1-0.
