Patna : Replying to South Africa’s first innings total of 311 all out, Australia were 245/9 in 67 overs at stumps on day two on March 23, 2018, in the third cricket test between the two countries at Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa, with wicketkeepr Tim Paine unbeaten on 33 in 77 balls and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood batting on 1. Australia still trail South Africa by 66 runs with just one wicket in hand.

Paine and spinner Nathan Lyon were involved in a 66 run partnership for the 9th wicket. Lyon scored 47 runs in 38 balls with 8 fours. The 8th Australian wicket fell when the team  score was 175. Australian opener Cameron Bancroft was the top scorer for Australia scoring 77 runs in 103 balls with 14 fours while his opening partner David Warner was out for 30. Captain Steven Smith was out for only 5 while Shaun Marsh scored 26. Allrounder Mitchell Marsh, younger brother of Shaun Marsh, was also out for 5. Usman Khwaja too was out for only 5.

For South Africa, fast bowler Morne Morkel, who is playing his last series, took 4/87 in 20 overs while fellow fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took 3/81 in 19 overs. Vernon Philander took 2/26 in 15 overs. Morkel took the wickets of Usman Khwaja, Steven Smith, Shaun Marsh, and Nathan Lyon. Rabada took the wickets of Warner, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc. Philander accounted for Bancroft and Mitchell Marsh.

Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 266/6,South Africa were all out for 311. Opener Dean Elgar carried his bat remaining not out on 141 in 284 balls hitting 20 fours and a six.
