Patna : Australia were 170/3 in 44 overs at tea on Day 1 in their first innings of the 4th Ashes test against England at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, UK, on September 4, 2019, with Steven Smith unbeaten on 60 in 93 balls hitting 7 fours and Travis Head batting on 18with 3 fours.

Electing to bat after winning the toss,  Australia lost their first wicket at 1 when opener David Warner fell to fast bowler Stuar Broad or zero. Australia lost their second wicket at 28 when Marcus Harris fell to Broad for 13. Smith and Marnus Labuschagne then added 116 runs for the third wicket. Labuschagne fell to fast bowler Craig Overton for 67 in 128 balls with 10 fours.
