Patna : Australia were 154/8 in 53 overs against England at tea on Day 1 of first Ashes Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK, on August 1, 2919, with Steven Smith batting on 66 in 139 balls hitting 5 fours and fast bowler Peter Siddle 7 not out. England fast bowler Stuart Broad took 4/38 in 14 overs while fellow fast bowler Chris Woakes took 3/35 in 15 overs. Ben Stokes took 1/44 in 11 overs. James Anderson could bowl only 4 overs due to injury.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, Australia lost their first wicket at 2 when opener David Warner was lbw to Broad for 2. They lost their second wicket at 17 when opener Cameron Bancroft fell to Broad for 8. Australia lost their third wicket at 35 when Usman Khawaja fell to Woakes for 13. Steven Smith and Travis Head then added 64 runs for the 4th wicket. Australia lost their 4th wicket at 99 when Travis Head fell to Woakes for 35.

Australia lost their 5th wicket at 105 when Matthew Wade fell to Woakes for 1. Captain Tim Paine (wk) fell to Broad for 5 making it 112/6. At the same score fast bowler James Pattinson fell to Broad for a duck making it 112/7. Pat Cummins fell to Stokes for 5 making it 122/8.
