Patna : Canadian teenage sensation and World No 30 Felix Auger Aliassime upset compatriot and World No 20 Denis Shapovalov, 20, in the first round of ATP Madrid Open, Spain, on May 5, 2019, late night. Aliassime beat Shapovalov in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 to enter the 2nd round where he will face World No 2 and five-time champion Rafael Nadal, Spain, on May 7, 2019.
Aliassime, 18, broke Shapovalov’s service three times in the match while the latter broke his service only once. His winning percentage on both his first and second serve (63% & 71%) was much better than that of Shapovalov (59% 7 62%). Aliassime served 3 Aces in the match to just one by Shapovalov. Aliassime won 54 service points to 41 by Shapovalov.
World No 48 Jan-Lenard Struff, 29, Germany, upset World No 34 Nick Kyrgios, 24, Australia, 7-6, 6-4 to enter the 2nd round. Struff fired 13 Aces in the match to 8 by Kyrgios.
