Patna: PM Narendra Modi’s sudden announcement to demonetise currency notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 from November 8 midnight created panic among the people across the state including state capital Patna. People started queueing up at the ATMs to surrender these currency notes and get them exchanged for Rs 100 notes.
At Kankarbagh colony and Rajendra Nagar, Patna, petrol pumps had sudden rush of two and four wheeler vehicle owners who got the tanks filled up in exchange of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes.
At Patna Junction and Rajendra Nagar station even those railway staff managing counters were not informed about the notes becoming illegal tenders. However, the passengers themselves were heard informing the counter booking clerks about the PM’s announcement resulting into confusion at the counters.
A late night passenger reaching Patna by air was shocked when the driver of taxi refused to accept Rs 1,000 note claiming they have been instructed by their operators not to accept Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes with immediate effect. On November 9 and at some places on November 10, the ATMs will not work. There would not be any change in any other form of currency exchange including cheque, DD, payment via credit or debit cards. People unable to deposit Rs 1,000, Rs 500 notes by December 30, can change the same till March 31, 2017 by furnishing ID proof.
