Patna : Fast bowlers Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Shami rocked the South African batting lineup reducing them to 36/3 after 15 overs in their first innings putting India in a commanding position at stumps on Day 2 of the 2nd test at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune, on October 11, 2019, with Theunis de Bruyn batting on 20 hitting 4 fours and Anrich Nortje unbeaten on 2. Umesh Yadav took 2/16 while Mohammad Shami took 1/3. South Africa trail by 565 runs. India had won the toss and opted to bat.
Earlier, India declared their first innings at 601/5 with captain Virat Kohli scoring an unbeaten 254 in 336 balls hitting 33 fours and 2 sixes, his 26th century in tests and 7th double century including 5 as captain. Kohli and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja added 225 runs for the 5th wicket. Jadeja fell to spinner Senuran Muthusamy for 91, Kohli also added 176 runs for the 4th wicket with vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, who fell to spinner Keshav Maharaj for 59 in 168 balls with 8 fours. For South Africa, fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took 3/93 in 30 overs.
