Patna : England defeated South Africa (SA) by 104 runs in the first match of ICC World Cup at Kennington Oval, London, UK, on May 30, 2019, night, with Jofra Arcer taking 3/27 in 7 overs, Liam Plunkett 2/37 in 7 overs, and Ben Stokes 2/12 in 2.5 overs. Spinners : Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali took one wicket each. South Africa won the toss and opted to bowl. England all-rounder Ben Stokes was declared Player of the match.

Replying to England’s 311/8 in 50 overs, South Africa were all out for 207 in 39.5 overs with opener and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock scoring 68 in 74 balls hitting 6 fours and 2 sixes and Rassie van der Dussen scoring 50 in 61 balls with 4 fours and a six. Captain Faf du Plessis fell to Jofra Archer for 5. Dussen also fell to Archer while Quinton de Kock fell to Liam Plunkett. Opener Hashim Amla fell to Plunkett for 13. Amla had retired hurt when he was 5 but later returned to bat. Jean-Paul Duminy fell to Moeen Ali for 8. Aidem Markram fell to Archer for 11. Dwayne Pretorious was run out for 1. Andile Phehlukwayo scored 24. Stokes took the wickets of Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir.

Batting first, England had scored 311/8 with opener Jason Roy scoring 54, Joe Root 51, captain Eoin Morgan 57, and Ben Stokes 89.
