Patna : World No 253 Nicolas Pierre Armand Mahut, 37, France, upset World No 19 Marco Cecchinato, 26, Italy, in a five-set thriller in the first round of French Open at Roland Garros, Paris, France, on May 26, 2019. Mahut, a doubles specialist, beat Cecchinato 2-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 coming from behind.

Mahut broke Cecchinato’s service 5 times in the match while the latter broke his service thrice in the match. He also won 4 games in a row during the match to 3 by Cecchinato. Mahut fired 10 Aces in the match to 6 Cecchinato, the 16th seed.

World No 34 Laslo Djere, 23, Serbia, also entered the 2nd round of the year’s second Grand Slam tournament defeating World No 91 Albert Ramos-Vinolas, 31, Spain, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 in the first round. Djere broke Vinolas service 5 times in the match while the latter broke his service only once. Djere also won 5 games in a row in the match to 2 by Vinolas.

World No 63 Casper Ruud, 20, Norway, beat World No 80 Ernests Gulbis, 30, Latvia, 6-2, 7-6, 6-0 to enter the 2nd round. Both the players fired 6 Aces each in the match. Ruud broke Gulbis’ service 6 times in the match while the latter broke his service only once.

World No 109 Alexei Popyrin, 19, Australia, upset World No 61 Ugo Humbert, 20, France, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to enter the 2nd round. Popyrin hammered 12 Aces in the match to 7 by Humbert.
