Patna : Top seed and 11 time champion Rafael Nadal, Spain, 3rd seed Dominic Thiem, Austria, World No 7 Kei Nishikori, Japan, and World No 14 Daniil Medvedev, Russia, advanced to the quarter-finals of ATP Barcelona Open at Barcelona, Spain, on April 25, 2019.
The winner of 17 Grand Slam singles title Nadal beat 2013 French Open finalist David Ferrer, 37, Spain, in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the third round at Barcelona Sports Center. Nadal broke Ferrer’s service 4 times while the latter broke his service once. Ferrer committed 5 double faults to 1 by Nadal. Ferrer though served 2 Aces to none by Nadal. Nadal won 3 games in a row to 2 by Ferrer. Nadal won 38 service points to 37 by his Ferrer, a four-time finalist here. Ferrer will retire next month.
Thiem beat World No 57 Jaume Munar, 21, Spain, 7-5, 6-1 in the 3rd round. Thiem broke Munar’s service 5 times in the match while 6he latter broke his service once. Thiem also won 6 games in a row in the match to 2 by Munar. Munar though fired 3 Aces to 1 by Thiem.
Two time champion Nishikori beat World No 31 Felix Auger- Aliassime, 18, Canada, 6-1, 6-3 to storm into the quarter-finals. Nishikori broke Aliassime’s service 5 times in the match while the latter broke his service only once. Nishikori won 5 games in a row to 2 by Aliassime. The Canadian fired 3 Aces to 1 by Nishikori.
Medvedev beat World No 61 Mackenzie McDonald, 24, USA, 6-3, 6-2 to sail into the QFs of the tournament. Medvedev broke McDonald’s serive 5 times in the match while the latter broke his service twice. Medvedev won 4 games in a row in the match to 2 by McDonald.
World no 81 Nicolas Jarry, 23, Chile, upset World No 43 Grigor Dimitrov, 27, Bulgaria, in three-sets 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 to advance to the QFs of the event. Both the players fired 6 Aces each in the match. Dimitriv won 3 break points to 2 by Jarry. Both the players won 59 service points each in the match. Dimitrov though won 4 games in a row to 2 by Jarry.
World No 48 Christian Garin, 22, Chile, upset World No 20 Denis Shapovalov, 20, Canada, 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the 3rd round of the event. Garin broke Shapovalov’s service 4 times while the latter broke his service once. He also won 5 games in a row in the match to 2 by Shapovalov. Garin fired 4 A ces to 3 by Shapovalov, who committed 3 double faults.
Garin, however, lost to World No 104 Roberto Carballes Baena, 26, Spain, 4-6, 6-7 in the 3rd round.
