Patna : Dominic Thiem, 25, Austria, upset winner of 20 Grand Slam singles titles Roger Federer, 37, Switzerland, in three-sets in the final to lift the men’s singles title at ATP Indian Wells Masters at California, USA, on March 18, 2019, his first Masters title. Federer was bidding for his 6th Indian Wells masters 1,000 title. Thiem now leads Federer 3-2 head to head. Thiem had earlier defeated Federer twice in 2016.
Thiem staged a remarkable comeback after losing the first set to defeat Roger Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in over 2 hours to win his first ATP Masters 1,000 title and 12th overall. Thiem broke Federer’s service thrice in the match while the latter broke his service twice. Federer served 3 Aces in the match to just 1 by Thiem. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match.
Thiem’s winning percentage on his second serve (76%)was much better than that of Federer’ (52%). Federer’s winning percentage on his first serve (71%) was slightly better than that of Thiem (67%). Thiem also committed 3 double faults to 2 by Federer.
