Patna : World No 60 Bianca Andreescu, 18, Canada, stunned winner of three Grand Slam singles title and World No 8 Angelique Kerber, 31, Germany, to win women’s title at Indian Wells Masters, a Premier WTA event, at California, USA, on March 18, 2019, her first Masters title.
Bianca, a wild card entry into the tournament, defeated Kerber in a tough three-set contest 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the final to win her first major title. Bianca broke Kerber’s service 4 times while the latter her service thrice. Both the players won 3 games each in a row. Bianca, however, also committed 6 double faults to 3 by Kerber. Bianca won 59 service points to 57 by Kerber, the winner of Wimbledon title in 2018.
Bianca’s winning percentage on her second serve (74%) was much higher than that of Kerber(47%). But, Kerber’s winning percentage on her first serve (66%) was slightly higher than that of Bianca (60%). Bianca served 2 Aces in the match to none by Kerber.
Unseeded Bianca had defeated World No 6 Elina Svitolina, 24, Ukraine, in the semi-finals and winner of two Grand Slam title and World No 20 Garbine Muguruza, Spain, in the quarter-finals. Naomi Osaka, Japan, had won the Indian Wells masters title in 2018 as an unseeded player.
