Patna High Court lawyers squat on Bailey Road to protest murder of colleague

Patna : Angry over sensational broad daylight murder of their colleague Jitendra Kumar, a resident of Shahwajpur, Rajivnagar, at Punaichak under Shastrinagar Police station, Patna, on December 5, lawyers of Patna High Court squatted on the middle of Bailey Road to protest the incident. Traffic remained virtually paralysed on the road for several hours on December 5.

The lawyers placed gas pipes on both flanks of the Bailey Road making it impossible to pass through. They did not allow anyone including school buses and autos carrying kids to pass through and were raising anti-government and anti-police slogans. They were demanding immediate arrest of the killers and implementation of Lawyers’ Protection Act.

Some cops, who were carrying an accident victim to PMCH on a police vehicle had to plead with lawyers for several minutes to allow them to pass through. The police vehicle was then allowed to proceed. Tempers were running high as few lawyers even manhandled a woman, who claimed herself to be a lawyer. Even a biker, who pleaded that he had to attend an emergency, had to return as the lawyers pushed him as well as his bike. A group of policemen reached the spot to pacify the agitating lawyers but they were chased away from there.

The agitation of lawyers on Bailey Road had its impact in the entire city as traffic system went haywire with long jam of vehicles seen almost everywhere. Traffic constables could not cope up with the situation as no one was willing to listen to them.

IG, Patna Zone, N H Khan has constituted a 10 member special investigating team (SIT) to probe into the murder of Patna High Court lawyer Jitendra Kumar at 9.35 am on December 5 when he was going to pick his senior on way to the court on his Scooty. He said that SIT would be headed by Patna Senior SP (SSP) and DIG, Central Range, would be monitoring the case. Khan said that an FIR had been lodged against nine persons in this connection. He said that four persons have been detained and raids were on to arrest the accused.
