Federer, Delpo, Anderson, Nishikori enter Round of 16 of ATP Shanghai Masters

Patna : World No 2 in ATP rankings and top seed Roger Federer, 37, Switzerland, World No 4 Juan Martin del Porto, 30, Argentina, and World No 8 Kevin Anderson, 32, South Africa, marched into the Round of 16  at Shanghai Masters tennis championship, an ATP 1,000 points event played on hard court, at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Minhang, Shanghai, China, on October 10, 2018.

World No 12 and 8th seed Kei Nishikori, 28, Japan, World No 28 Roberto Bautista Agut, 30, Spain, and World No 57 Sam Querrey, 31, USA, have also entered Round of 16 of the tournament.

Defending champion Federer beat World No 22, Russia, Daniil Medvedev, in a tough three-set contest 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the second round. Federer fired 10 Aces in the match to 5 by Medvedev, who committed to 2 double faults. Federer won 3 break points while Medvedev won 2. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match. Federer’s winning percentage on his second serve was just 31 % though it was 77 % on the first serve. Medvedev’s winning percentage on second serve was 60% while on first serve it was 62%.

Third seed Juan Martin del Porto beat World No 25 Richard Gasquet, 32, France, 7-5, 7-6 in the second round on October 10. Gasquet though fired 12 Aces to 8 by Delpo, who also committed 2 double faults. But, Delpo won 2 break points to 1 by Gasquet. He also won 5 games in a row in the match to 2 by Gasquet.

Anderson, the 7th seed,  beat World No 83 Mikhail Kukushkin, 30, Kazakhstani, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. Anderson fired 14 Aces in the match to just 1 by Kukushkin. Anderson also won 3 break points besides 5 games in a row. Anderson committed 3 double faults to 2 by Kukushkin.

Nishikori, the 8th seed, beat World No 415 Wu Yibing, 18, China, in a three-set encounter 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the second round. Both the players served 3 Aces each in the match. Nishikori, hoever, won 5 break points to 2 by Yibing. Nishikori also won 7 games in a row to 3 by Yibing.

Querrey beat World No 59 Taylor Fritz, 20, USA, in a three-set encounter 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 in the second round. Querrey fired 13 Aces in the match to 12 by Fritz. Both the players committed 3 double faults each. Querrey won 3 break points to just 1 by Fritz.

Agut beat World No 78 Mackenzie McDonald, 23, USA, in a three-set thriller 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the second round. Agut served 4 Aces in the match to 5 by McDonald. Agut won 5 break points while McDonald won 3.
