Bettiah : Sunni Kumar Barnwal, 25, son of Bhikhari Barnwal of village Basantpur under Sathi police station in West Champaran district, died in firing allegedly by a Prohibition and Excise police team on July 4, 2018, morning. An irate mob of villagers placed his body on Narakatiaganj-Bettiah road and paralysed the traffic for several hours to register their protest against the death of Sunni in firing.

Later on, SHO, Sathi police station, Awadesh Jha and SDPO Narakatiaganj Mohammad Nissar Ahamad reached the spot and persuaded the protesters to lift the blockade assuring them that stern action will be taken against the Prohibition & Excise Department team. Police sent the body to MJK Hospital, Bettiah, for autopsy.

Police sources said that Prohibition and Excise department team had gone to Basantpur to conduct raid after getting secret information that liquor was stocked there. But, a scuffle took place between the excise team and the villagers. The excise team finding itself surrounded by the villagers opened fire in self- defence but the bullet hit Sunni who died on the spot. Sunni was running on the road  practicing for  a competition when the bullet hit him.
