Vinesh Phogat, Sumit win gold medals in wrestling at CWG

Patna : Vinesh Phogat, 23, India, won gold medal in women’s 50 kg freestyle wresting at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Queensland, Australia, on April 14, 2018, defeating Jessica Macdonald, Canada, 13-3 in the final.

Sumit, 25, India, also won gold medal in men’s 125 kg freestyle wresting. He had a walkover after his opponent Sinivie Boltic, 35, Nigeria, was injured earlier. Sumit hails from Delhi. Sakshi Malik, 25, Haryana, India, won bronze medal in defeating Tayla Ford, New Zealand, in a tough contest 6-5. Sakshi had also won bronze medal at 2016 Rio Olympics.

Vinesh, a native of village Balali, Haryana, had won gold medal in 48kg freestyle wrestling at 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games too. She comes from a wrestling background. Her cousin Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumar Phogat are also top international wrestlers having won gold medals had Commonwealth Games.
