Patna : World Number 40 Fernando Verdasco, 34, Spain, upset 20th seed fellow Spainiard Roberto Bautista Agut, 29, in the first round of Australian Open (AO) tennis 2018 in straight sets 6-1, 7-5, 7-5 on Januray 16, 2018. World Number 86 Lukas Lacko, Slovak Republic, upset 22nd seed Milos Raunic, 27, Canada, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 in a tough encounter in the first round. Sam Querry, US, the 13th seed, beat World Number 38 Feliciano Lopez, 36, Spain, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in the first round.

Maria Sharapova, Russia, defeated Germany’s Tatjana Maria, 30, in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of Australian Open tennis 2018 on January 16, 2018. Tatjana is currently ranked 46th in the WTA rankings. Although charismatic Sharapova is currently ranked 48 in the WTA rankings, she has won five Grand Slam titles in the past.
