Gopalganj: A police team on December 6 intercepted three persons riding two bikes on a bridge over river Gandak at Bagauch in Gopalganj district and seized 500 bottles of masaledar (spicy) liquor of Uttar Pradesh (UP) from their possession. Police arrested one person in this connection though two others managed to escape from there.

Kuchaikot ps SHO Mahendra Kumar had received inputs that some persons were smuggling liquor from neighbouring UP after which a police team led by Sub-inspector (SI) Vinay Kumar laid a trap on the bridge and found three persons carrying a gunny bag with choker (cattle food) in it. When the police team started searching the bag, two persons parked their bikes and escaped from there while one of their associates was arrested by the cops.

Police said that the arrested person was identified as Mogal Prasad, a native of village Semra under Thawe police station in Gopalganj district. Police said that Mogal told police that they were bringing liquor from Salemgarh (UP) for Thawe bazaar. The arrested person gave vital information to the police and raids were on to arrest his two associates, police added.

A police officer, on condition of anonymity, said that huge quantity of liquor is available on the border of UP touching Gopalganj in Bihar and that is is the reason behind largescale smuggling of liquor from UP into Bihar. He said that local dealers sale liquor on higher prices to the smugglers and they have links with dealers of Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
