Patna : World No 26 in WTA rankings Johann Konta, 28, UK, upset World No 7 and 2017 US Open Champion Sloane Stephens, 26, USA, in straight sets in the quarter-finals (QFs) on June 4, 2019, to advance to the women’s singles semi-finals of French Open, a Grand Slam event played on clay courts.
Konta beat Stephens 6-1, 6-4 at Roland Garros, Paris, France, to become the first British Woman since 1983 to reach the French Open semi-finals. Konta fired 6 Aces in the match to just 1 by Stephens. Konta also broke Stephens’s service thrice in the match besides winning 7 games in a row.
Konta had reached Australian Open SFs in 2016 and Wimbledon SFs in 2017. Stephens had reached French Open final in 2018 and Australian Open SFs in 2013.
