Patna : As part of a special campaign, a helmet seat belt checking drive was carried out across the state on June 20, 2020, during which the drivers found violating road safety rules were slapped fine and asked to follow rules. A total of 1,245 vehicles were checked during the drive in the districts and 526 drivers were slapped fine amounting to Rs 14 lakh for violating rules.
State Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Aggarwal said that the positive effect of strict implementation of Motor Vehicles Act was noticed during the drive. He said that there has been an increase in percentage of the people using helmets and seat belt while driving
vehicles in the districts.
In 2018, altogether 2,678 people not wearing helmets had died in separate accidents. In 2019, the 925 drivers and pillion riders not wearing helmets had died in different accidents.
Agarwal has instructed all District Transport Officers (DTOs) to take action for suspension of driving licenses of those repeatedly violating MV rules. The Motor Vehicle Act are required to be strictly enforced to reduce road accidents, he pointed out. Agarwal said that it is mandatory for the drivers of two-wheelers to wear helmets while drivers of four-wheelers have to use seat belts. He said that damages in road accidents can be reduced to a great extent if drivers use helmets and seat belts.
