( Alexander Zverev after beating Novak Djokovic in Tokyo Olympics SF)

Patna : World No 1 Novak Djokovic, 34, Serbia, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of World No 5 Alexander Zverev, 34, Germany, in tennis men’s singles semi-final at Tokyo Olympics on July 30, 2021. Zverev had reached US Open Final in 2020 and French Open SFs in 2021. The German had also reached Australian Open SFs in 2020.

Zverev defeated Djokovic in a three-game thriller 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 rallying back from one set down to reach the final at Tokyo Olympics ending the Serbian’s golden slam bid. Zverev won 10 of the last 11 games. Djokovic has won three Grand Slam singles titles : Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon, in 2021.
