Patna : World No 7 Alexander Zverev, 22, Germany, beat 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka, 34, Switzerland, in four sets at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, to reach the semi-finals of Australian Open (AO) 2020 for the first time in his career.

Alexander Zverev, the 7th seed, beat 15th seed Stan Wawrinka 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in 2 hr 19 minutes in quarter-finals at Rod Laver Arena battling back from one set down. Zverev, who had reached QFs at French Open in 2018 and 2019, hammered 13 Aces in the match to 5 by Wawrinka, the winner of three Grand Slam titles.

The German, who has won 11 career titles, won 5 break points in the match to 3 by the Swiss. Both the players won 5 games each in a row in the match. Wawrinka won 65 service points to 64 by the German. Wawrinka, however, committed 5 double faults to 1 by Zverev, who is also known as ‘Sascha’. Zverev, who hit 34 winners, had raced to 4-0 lead in 4th set.
