Patna : World No 5 in ATP rankings Alexander Zverev, 22, Germany, and World No 14 Daniil Medvededv, 23, Russia, crashed out of the Italian Open at Rome, Italy, suffering shock defeats on May 14, 2019, at Foro Italico, Rome, Italy.
World No 33 Matteo Berrettini, 23, Italy, defeated World No 5 Alexander Zverev , 22, Germany, in the second round of Italian Open on May 14, 2019, causing a major upset in the tournament while World No 36 Nick Kyrgios, 24, Australia, stunned World No 14 Daniil Medvedev in the first round.
Berrettini beat Alexander Zverev, the 4th seed, in straight sets 7-5, 7-5 in 1 hr 48 minutes in the second round. Berrettini broke Zverev’s servive four times in the match while the latter broke his service twice. Both the players won 3 games each in a row. Zverev though fired 10 Aces in the match to 5 by Berrettini. But he also committed 6 double faults in the match to 3 by the Italian. Berrettini’s winning percentage on his second serve (55%) was much higher than that of Zverev (35%) though his winning percentage on first serve ( 77%) was slightly lower than that of Zverev (80%).
Kyrgios upset Daniil Medvedev, the 12th seed, in three-sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round. Kyrgios hammered 15 Aces in the match to 12 by Medvedev, who committed 5 double faults. Kyrgios won 2 break points while Medvedev won one. Kyrgios’ winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 79% & 67 %) was better than that of Medvedev (76% & 57%).
World No 13 and 111th seed Karen Khachanov, 22, Russia, entered the 3rd round of the clay court tournament defeating World No 20 Roberto Bautista Agut, 31, Spain, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in 2 hr 28 minutes in the 2nd round on May 14. Khachanov served 6 Aces in the match to 3 by Agut. Khachanov won 4 break points to 2 by Agut. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match.
World No 10 Marin Cilic, 30, Croatia, entered the 2nd round beating World No 416 Andrea Basso, 25, Italy, 6-1, 7-5 in the first round. Cilic fired 7 Aces in the match to 5 by Basso.
World No 51 Jan-Lenard Struff beat World No 48 Grigor Dimitrov, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 to enter the 2nd round. Struff hammered 17 Aces in the match to 6 by Dimitrov. Struff won 4 break points to 2 by Dimitrov, a former Top 10 player. Struff won 5 games in a row to 3 by Dimitrov.
