Patna : World No 50 Wang Yafan, 24, China, defeated World No 5 Elina Svitolina, 24, Ukraine, in straight sets in the women’s singles 2nd round of Miami Open at Florida, USA, on March 23, 2019, in a major upset in the tournament.
Wang Yafan beat Svitolina, who had reached the semi-finals of Indian Wells Masters last week, 6-2, 6-4 in 1 hr 22 minutes to enter the 3rd round of the event. Yafan broke Svitolina’s service 5 times in the match while the latter broke her service twice. Yafan won 4 games in a row during the match to 3 by Svitolina. Svitolina committed 6 double faults to 1 by Yafan. Yafan’s winning percentage both on her first and second serve (68% & 53 %) was better than that of Svitolina ( 65% & 38%). World No 4 Angelique Kerber, 31, Germany, defeated World No 113 Karolina Muchova, 22, Czech Republic, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to enter the 3rd round. Muchova, however, fired 4 Aces in the match to none by Kerber. Kerber committed 4 double faults to 2 by Muchova. Kerber broke Muchova’s service 5 times while the latter broke her service 4 times in the match.
