Patna : World No  127 Taro Daniel, 26, Japan, handed a shock defeat to 2nd seed and World No 14 Borna Coric, 22, Croatia, in the first round of Rakuten Japan Open at Tokyo, Japan, on October 1, 2019.

Danial turfed out Coric from the tournament in a three-set slugfest 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 at Ariake Colisium, Musashino Forest Sports Plaxa, Koto, Tokyo, Japan, due to slightly higher winning percentage both on his first and second serve. Coric though fired 15 Aces to 7 by Daniel. The Japanese committed 6 double faults in the match to 2 by Coric. Both the players won 2 break points each and three games each in a row in the match. Both of them also won 67 service points each in the match. Daniel had stunned World No 1 Novak Djokovic in nthe 1st round of Indian Wells Masters in March 2018.

World No 136 Yasutaka Uchiyama, 27, Japan, upset 4th seed and World No 23 Benoit Paire, 30, France, crushing him 6-2, 6-2 in the first round winning 4 break points in the match. Paire committed 6 double faults in the match. Uchiyama also won 4 games in a row in the match.

World No 53 Reilly Opelka, 22, USA, upset 7th seed and World No 31 Taylor Fritz, 21, USA, 6-3, 6-4 in first round. Opelka fired 16 Aces in the match to 8 by Fritz. Opelka won 2 break points in the match to none by Fritz. Opelka won 43 service points in the match to 33 by Fritz.
