Ara : A married woman Mahepara Khatoon, 22, was strangulated to death at her in-laws’ place in Nazirganj locality under Ara Town police station in Bhojpur district on October 29, 2018, late evening, allegedly for not begetting a child even after three years of marriage. All the family members are absconding after the incident.

A named FIR has been lodged with Ara Town police station against four persons including Mahepara’s husband Md Ali Hasan, a bike mechanic, brother-in-law (devar) Chhotu, mother-in-law Buni Khatoon, and sister-in-law Rozy Khatoon, on the statement of deceased’s uncle Md Neyaz Khan. Police brought the body over to Sadar Hospital, Ara, for postmortem.

SHO, Ara Town Police Station, J P Singh said that Mahepara Khatoon, daughter of Md Merz Khan of Doodh Katora locality under Ara Town police station, was married to Ali Hasan alias Sonu of Nazirganj locality under the police station on November 2015. Her in-laws allegedly always tortured her as she could not bear a child and finally strangulated her to death and hanged her body to the ceiling to show it was case of suicide on October 29 late evening, the SHO added. The residents of the area informed police who recovered the body.

Md Neyaz Khan, deceased’s uncle, alleged that Mahepara’s in-laws called her sterile and lunatic and always tortured her for more dowry.
